Character Building

Today each group had to do a quick presentation on their family of characters. We had to give a description on the theme, the profile of which character was, developed sketches on what we want our character to look like and then followed up by a photo-shopped version of it. Our group described each of their characters with the elements of fire, earth, space, air, water and time. Since my character was based on the element of air, I decided to design mine around a mythical creature, a gryphon. After the presentations we started working more on our sketches, discussing ideas on how to improve our designs and began working on character profiles.

In our second class we started working on lighting on 3D objects by using target spots and omni lighting. The target spots helps direct the light and create highlights and shadows by using the four view portals as guidance. The further you place the target spot light the more light is directed onto the shapes and with the omni light you are able to put more light on from different angles. This tutorials came to be very helpful because it would not leave a 3D model as standard whenever it came to rendering and it also helps show more definition in the detail and shape.

Preview into Project two

Today, we started talking about our second project for 3D. We were split into groups of 6 and then given our briefs explaining that project two was based on creating a character from 6 different profiles, 15 different layouts and proportions and from whatever your group decides to base your characters on as a family. We decided to design our family of characters as a group of elemental guardians such as fire, water, air, space, time and earth. I wanted to design mine as air because I thought it would be a challenge on how to create a character around that kind of element. Whenever we decided on what other elements the rest of the group would be working on, we started working on what features we could use for each character, the layouts and proportions and profiles with sketches.

In the second part of our class we were introduced to how to produce a lego figure. We viewed the measurements and each part of the figure to examine how to construct it together on photoshop. We began on how to make the lego head using the front view portal and by using lines to draw one side of the head and then using lathe to make it 3D. Using the lathe technique was slightly difficult but when using polygon modelling to make the lego head it came across as more difficult to construct.
